About Matt Leach
Krav Maga Instructor-Head of Krav Maga Combat Academy
In his twenties Matt worked the door at pubs and clubs in the home counties and London, here he gained experience of de-escalating confrontations and dealing with violent situations. He quickly gained a reputation for his ability to calm down an ugly situation and for being dependable in a crisis. He went on to work in other areas of security including close protection and was involved with the physical security of MOD main building in Whitehall.
“In my early thirties I was working as a legal consultant and was missing physical challenges and excitement. I took up Krav Maga with one of the large organisations and attended classes as much as I could, usually for 6 to 7 hours per week.”
After several years of training Matt decided to become an instructor and undertook around 400 hours of instructor training with ex members of the special forces including around 200 hours with the former Captain responsible for Krav Maga training in the IDF and head instructor of the Lotar Counter Terror School.
Matt’s passion for Krav Maga is reflected in the way he teaches. His knowledge of Krav Maga is complemented by his real world experience of handling confrontation and street fighting.
About Vuyisile Dyolotana
Nguni Stick fighting Instructor
Chairman of the foremost stick fighting federation in the Western Cape
Stick fighting forms an integral part of the Nguni Warrior.
There is a great debate about the origins of this indigenous sport within the Zulu group, some trace it to the times of Shaka Zulu and others to Amalandela, the son of Gumede, around 1670. However it is generally agreed that during Shaka’s reign this sport was used as a way of training young men for war and self-defense. This was extended to the times of Dingaan, who was Shaka’s successor. As new leaders emerged the purpose of stick fighting also changed. During the reign Cetshwayo who succeeded Dingaan, it was used as means of resolving internal disputes, however, there were protocols as it was not intended for the purposes of killing.
Stick fighting forms an integral part of Zulu cultural tradition, fulfilling as it does an important teaching purpose. As such, for Zulu males, stick fighting is pivotal in upholding a social system that constructs accepted roles and modes of behavior.
